Hamilton Day 8 and 9

Writer's picture: Elizabeth BeckElizabeth Beck

Day 8 and 9 for Hamilton consisted of crosstie time, round pen, lunging, getting to go out in his own pasture for the first time, got his hooves trimmed, saddled the first time since I’ve had him, and getting ponied around the farm and exposed to things!

Hamilton LOVED getting to go out on pasture! We have been working on cross-tying as he tends to back up for no reason when he feels like it. He is slowly getting better at it. In the video you will see basic grooming being done before I saddle him. He did really well with saddling. When we move to the round pen you will notice that Hamilton is doing phenomenal at lunging at a trot. If you remember in the beginning of our journey, getting Hamilton to lope even off lead was a struggle for him. You will notice as he lopes he is not collected and kind of drags me around in the circle with him. With time and work, he will understand how to have a better collected lope to help him not pull.

If you remember, in my “Day 4 and 5” video, Hamilton has a hard time trotting on the ground with you. When pressure is given to him, he jerks his head in, making it impossible to keep going. So as mentioned, the trusty rope horse came to the rescue. I used my rope horse to pony him and Hamilton quickly learned it was way easier to go alongside of the rope horse then be tugged on. He caught on so well! We took an adventure around the farm and saw trains, fox, geese, ducks, went across bridges, and went by water. He did great with everything and the scariest thing was the train - I don’t blame him! But with time, it will be nothing to him.
