Day 4 and 5 were two big days for Hamilton. We did a lot of desensitizing, lung line work, round pen work, groundwork, and a little riding. In the video, you will notice that Hamilton has a hard time staying with you when you ask him to trot. This will be something we need to work on. He doesn’t give to pressure that well and it will be something I need to do while ponying him off of another horse. (Rope horse to the rescue ;) ) When he feels the pressure, he jerks his head in, making it hard for me to keep going, ponying him off of another horse will help teach him to give into pressure. Hamilton still struggles with coming into me not only for inside turns, but also when we are done working. Although he does this while working, he is a HUGE love bug when you’re cleaning his stall and he just wants to be loved on.
Hamilton did very well with desensitization, he was a little weary of a few things but overall did good! In the video, you will hear bells, he had bells around his neck with plastic bags. He was most scared of the umbrella, but learned it wouldn’t eat him ;) I am super proud of him and how well he has been doing. There is a lot he needs work on but it’s good for day 5!
As I rode him, he reared, but only did it once, I asked him to move on forward and he did. In the video you will see that he also had a spot where he did not want to move, so he stopped and turned his head toward my leg. The video also shows him when he got frustrated and backed up fast without being asked to back up. He is stubborn on not wanting to do what he is asked. As I was doing circles he did not want to trot and was breaking and going on and off. After he made a good consistent circle both directions I let him be done.
He is starting to understand laying down better and better. Although he is starting to get up on his own time not when asked which will be something we work on. Overall, he has been doing pretty good and I’m happy with his slow improvements!
Hamilton got to enjoy a little time with the Back On Track blanket as well! Thank you for following #HOPTeamHamilton and our journey!
